Abstract

Normally, when we think about having children, we don’t feel the need to undergo blood or genetic testing to check whether we carry any genes or hereditary conditions that could cause serious illnesses in our children. Misinformation plays a major role in this lack of preventive measures.

The goal of this paper is to raise awareness about how common it is to be a carrier of sickle cell trait and, more generally, of any recessive genetic condition. It demonstrates that, if we educate ourselves thoroughly on the subject, we can prevent many diseases and spare children from having sad faces, allowing their spirits to shine out into the world in perfect health.

It is believed that the foundation for change lies in knowledge, which provides the necessary tools to achieve it. It is essential to avoid assigning blame or taking refuge in the phrase, “It was fate, and there was nothing we could do”; prevention is just a brief investigation away.

Keywords: iron-deficiency anemia, sickle cell disease, genetics, prevention.
