Evaluation of strawberry production in a vertical farming system using organic and inorganic fertilizers in the Certag-Gualaceo area

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to compare strawberry crop yields in a vertical system by evaluating the use of organic fertilizer made from two types of manure—cow manure (60%) and guinea pig manure (40%)— compared to inorganic fertilization, with doses of CaBoron (calcium: 7.2% and boron: 1.5%) and G-5 (nitrogen: 20%, phosphorus: 20%, and potassium: 15%). The study was conducted in the canton of Gualaceo using a mixed experimental design, with analysis of both qualitative and quantitative variables. To this end, a vertical cultivation system equipped with drip irrigation was installed, which allowed for better use of space and more precise control over strawberry production conditions.
Throughout the experiment, various growth and yield indicators—such as plant height, the number of leaves and flowers, the number of fruits per plant, and the total harvest weight in kilograms—were recorded on data sheets and then organized into statistical tables to facilitate analysis. The results showed clear differences between the two treatments. On the one hand, inorganic fertilization promoted faster growth in the early stages and resulted in a higher total yield. On the other hand, organic fertilization stood out for producing firmer fruit. It was observed that both organic and inorganic fertilization can work well in a vertical farming system, although the organically grown fruit remained firm and in good condition longer after being harvested, while the inorganically fertilized strawberries softened more quickly. The choice of system will depend on the grower’s priorities: whether they seek to maximize yield in the short term or prefer to adopt healthier, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly practices.
Keywords: strawberry cultivation, vertical farming, organic fertilization, inorganic fertilization, sustainability.
