Un S.O.S por nuestros glaciares
An S.O.S. for our glaciers

Abstract
The objective of this study is to estimate the percentage of glacial ice area in Ecuador that has been lost from 1984 to 2022. To do this, we used the Google Earth Engine Timelapse tool to capture images during the period analyzed and GIMP to process them. The data were expressed as percentages for each year relative to 1984, based on the white pixels occupied by each glacier.
The results are consistent with those previously reported, indicating that the loss of ice-covered area exceeded 30% during the study period. The Carihuairazo volcano was the most affected, with a reduction of approximately 70%, while the Antisana and Cayambe glaciers were the least affected, with reductions of 18.9% and 16.1%, respectively. Given the rapid loss of these freshwater reserves and their link to global warming, there is an urgent need to raise public awareness about this looming problem, which could become very serious in the near future.
Keywords: global warming, climate change, glaciers, Ecuador.
