Abstract
This project investigates the main household water treatment techniques used to prevent waterborne diseases. To this end, a survey was conducted among members of the La Salle Educational Unit in Azogues to evaluate the effectiveness of boiling, filtration, chlorination, and solar disinfection (SODIS) in reducing turbidity and eliminating harmful microorganisms.
The comparative analysis shows that boiling water is one of the most efficient methods for eliminating bacteria and microbes, with effectiveness rates exceeding 99.9%, while chlorination stands out for its residual effect—that is, its ability to protect water during storage [1, 2]. However, the study reveals a gap in information: a significant proportion of participants are unaware of the impact and safety of these processes.
Currently, access to safe drinking water remains a problem linked to a lack of logistics and scientific information. Therefore, it is concluded that health education must translate theory into everyday actions that protect the educational community.
Keywords: water purification, household water treatment, public health, water boiling, waterborne diseases, microbiological efficacy.
