The Relationship Between Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Respiratory Health Among Students at a School in Cuenca

Abstract

This study evaluated the relationship between the concentration of fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) suspended in the air and the incidence of respiratory symptoms at an educational institution during the period from 2022 to 2024. For the analysis, the institutional medical database was used—ensuring the confidentiality of the cases and with academic and professional guidance—from which the rate of respiratory symptoms was derived. Additionally, the EMOV database was consulted to obtain current and historical values for PM2.5 concentrations during the months of September through November from 2022 to 2024. Using these data, the arithmetic mean of fine particulate matter in the city’s atmosphere was calculated and correlated with data on the rates of respiratory symptoms at the institution for the same period and months. The data showed that respiratory symptoms vary depending on the year analyzed, with a positive correlation between the rate of respiratory symptoms and PM2.5 concentration. These results indicate that exposure to PM2.5 at the institution could induce inflammatory responses in the body associated with respiratory symptoms. We suggest expanding the research to consider other variables, such as the presence of seasonal allergens and temperature; furthermore, extending the analysis period would facilitate the identification of behavioral patterns.
