La mujer en la música clásica
Women in classical music
Autora: Paula Victoria Jara Peralta (Unidad Educativa Particular Salesiana María Auxiliadora)
Abstract
Women have had to survive daily in a prejudiced and stereotypical society, which has gone so far as to say that they were incapable of learning as well as men.
However, there were those pioneers who knew how to defend their abilities against anyone who wanted to test how capable and prepared they were.
Classical music features famous figures such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Vivaldi, and Paganini, among others, but it seems that no one knows or is aware of the existence of the woman who became an orchestra conductor in the 20th century, or those who, today, compose beautiful pieces of music and are not remunerated as they should be; all this because the music industry does not dare to take a chance on a woman, let alone change the landscape of classical music.
The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of how undervalued women are in the music world, recognizing Antonia Brico, the first female orchestra conductor, but emphasizing that today, almost thirty-three years later, misogynistic gaps remain in this environment, with women currently fighting for change.
Keywords: music, history, women, legacy, inequality.
