Social media in secondary education: benefits and challenges in EGB and BGU

Autor: Kevin Armando Calle Maldonado (Unidad Educativa José Peralta)

Abstract

This study analyzes the benefits and challenges of using social media and technology in Basic General Education (EGB) and the Unified General High School Program (BGU). The main objective was to examine how these digital tools influence the teaching-learning process, identifying both their pedagogical contributions and the risks associated with their implementation in the classroom.

The study was conducted through a literature review of recent research and official guidelines, supplemented by a critical analysis of the key dimensions involved in their educational use. Among these variables, the study examined motivation, communication, access to information, skills development, inclusion, and digital coexistence.

The results show that social media and technology increase student motivation, strengthen collaborative work, enhance communication among educational stakeholders, and promote the development of digital skills essential for the 21st century. However, at the same time, critical challenges were identified, such as distraction, information overload, the digital divide, technological dependence, and risks related to safety and cyberbullying. It is concluded that the benefits can outweigh the risks if clear guidelines are established, along with appropriate instructional planning and ongoing support from teachers and families. Therefore, the integration of technology in elementary and middle school education must be thoughtful, ethical, and aimed at fostering critical and responsible digital citizens.
