Abstract
In this article, we highlight that the use of video games in an educational setting is a strategy for boosting motivation and fostering the development of cognitive skills among students. For this reason, we believe it is necessary to analyze and understand how these tools objectively benefit students’ learning process.
It is important to understand that, in a society that is changing and undergoing constant digitization, education cannot be left behind. Thus, by implementing these complementary measures in the classroom, we will not only boost motivation but also develop self-determination, cognitive skills, and other abilities necessary for our future.
Exploring these innovative methods not only allows for a review of the basic concepts of the subjects but also enables the simulation of situations that require very careful control. This is especially useful when working in different contexts or with certain real-life situations where a single mistake could have dire consequences.
For our research, we employed a quantitative methodology that assesses how students use video games in their daily lives. Upon analyzing the results, we found them to be quite encouraging, as they demonstrate the high level of interest in video games. We believe that, with proper implementation in the classroom, a culture of learning could be fostered without studying becoming tedious or something done solely out of obligation.
Video games emerge as a complementary, playful-digital tool where, in a space controlled and moderated by teachers, these resources play a fundamental role in formative education and active learning; therefore, we maintain that the proper management of educational video games can bring about a profound change in the way we understand education, significantly advancing it for the benefit of student development.
