Evaluation of growth and fattening in guinea pigs with a dietary supplement containing oregano flour to improve meat flavor at the UEAS

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the growth and weight gain of guinea pigs by incorporating oregano flour into their daily diet. The use of this ingredient is intended to serve as a preventive measure against disease, while also significantly improving the quality of the meat produced at the Salesian Agronomic Educational Unit (UEAS). To achieve these goals, a balanced feed was formulated with different mixing ratios, allowing for accurate tracking of each guinea pig’s feed intake. The guinea pigs’ development was monitored through weekly weigh-ins to determine which group achieved better performance and physical condition. The results were validated through a post-tasting survey to evaluate the flavor and acceptance of the meat.
The study was conducted using a mixed-methods research approach. The quantitative component focused on the systematic recording of weekly weights, while the qualitative component analyzed the guinea pigs’ acceptance of the feed and consumers’ perception of the meat. The study involved 24 guinea pigs, which were fed a balanced diet containing more than 18% protein and varying concentrations of oregano. The results showed that no animal became ill during the trial and that the treatment with 1 gram of oregano meal per kilogram of feed was the most effective, yielding the highest weights and the highest flavor score.
Keywords: guinea pig farming, oregano meal, guinea pig growth and fattening, organoleptic quality, feed supplementation, balanced diet.
